Dylan Anderson Receives Outstanding Student Paper Award

Posted on Wednesday, February 8, 2017

Congratulations! PhD Student Dylan Anderson received an Outstanding Student Paper Award for his presentation in at the AGU Conference in San Francisco, Calif. His work is related to the NSF-funded project, Collaborative Research: Large-scale laboratory investigation and numerical modeling of sheet flow sediment transport dynamics across a surf zone sand bar (PI Daniel Cox) and was conducted in collaboration with researchers at the University of Delaware. Anderson’s research project used the Large Wave Flume at the O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory to investigate mechanisms that drive sediment transport across sand bars under near-breaking waves in the surf zone. His work shows, for the first time, how horizontal and vertical pressure gradients are exerted simultaneously by waves on the sea bed and how the sea bed responds. Ultimately, this information can be used to make better predictions of how beaches will erode and recovery after large storms.
