When asked how she first learned about ARCS Foundation Oregon, new member Danielle Robinson laughs, "How could I not hear about ARCS Oregon?! The chapter is almost legendary among those who attended the AMC (All Member Conference) in Portland a few years ago. In all seriousness, I have been a member of ARCS—through the Metro Washington Chapter for ten years and now serve as National Secretary, so I am very familiar with ARCS Oregon through your work and wonderful interactions with your members."
Danielle's enthusiasm is apparent. "Since moving to Oregon, the members of ARCS Oregon have gone out of their way to make me feel welcome. I will maintain my membership in the Metro-Washington chapter as a non-resident, but I am looking forward to engaging with ARCS Oregon in person. There really is no virtual substitute for face-to-face interactions."
Danielle offers a clear-eyed view of the challenges facing scientific research and has concrete suggestions for personal and philanthropic support for science.
"ARCS has a proud history of being a champion for scientific advancement. The trailblazing women who founded the organization inspire us to emulate their energy, commitment, and resourcefulness. However, the landscape of science, volunteerism, and philanthropy is quite different from those early days. Today, trust and understanding of science is dishearteningly low. We have a unique and respected platform from which to be non-partisan ambassadors for science. We should not underestimate the value of sharing the mission of ARCS in even the smallest of ways. Consider serving on a public school advisory or curriculum panel, judge a local science fair, attend a middle school robotics competition and cheer with abandon. Let others know that science is exciting, respected, and vital. Finally, I believe we should meet our members where they are. We are made richer by the diversity of contributions from enterprising early-career women, seasoned corporate veterans, and sage retirees. In this, I believe ARCS Oregon is particularly strong, and I am truly excited by the opportunity to contribute to this Chapter."
Danielle’s journey with ARCS Foundation reflects a deep commitment to supporting scholars and fostering community. We are excited to welcome Danielle to ARCS Oregon.
