Hello Oregon ARCS community,
My name is Rachel Bedford, and I am currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oregon, where I completed my PhD in 2023. My research focuses on the genetic mechanisms behind motor neuron survival, with implications for diseases such as ALS and SMA. In addition to my lab work, I serve as a Communications Specialist for the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance at the Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact. In this role, I collaborate with researchers to translate complex scientific findings and write engaging stories that showcase the impact of their work. These experiences have deepened my passion for science communication, and I am actively transitioning from research to a role in the nonprofit sector where I can further support scientific research and impact.
I joined ARCS because I am passionate about advancing science, and I believe supporting young scientists is essential to that mission. I am excited to contribute my research background and communication skills to highlight the impact of our scholars and the value of supporting them. I currently serve on the communications committee and look forward to helping elevate the work and accomplishments of our organization.
Originally from Denver, I moved to Oregon in 2017 for graduate school and fell in love with the state. My husband and I recently bought our first home in Creswell, and we are eager to continue building connections in the area. We’re choosing to settle down here, and part of that is about building a network and a sense of community—not just friendships, but also mentorship. At this stage in my career, I’m transitioning from research and would love to have a group I can turn to for advice and support along the way. It’s one of the aspects of ARCS that I find truly beautiful, and I look forward to helping grow and strengthen this part of our group.
Outside of science, I enjoy gardening, traveling, and cooking, and I’m thrilled to be part of ARCS as I continue to connect with more members!
