About the University of Oregon

The University of Oregon is a public institution located in Eugene that was founded in 1876 with 155 students and five faculty members.  Today the UO serves over 24,548 (3,719 postgraduates, 20,829 undergraduates) students from all 50 of the United States, the District of Columbia, two U.S. territories, and 94 countries around the world.

In 1969, the UO was admitted into the exclusive membership of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading research universities devoted to maintaining a strong system of academic research and education. The AAU currently consists of sixty universities in the U.S., both public and private, and two universities in Canada.  The UO is one of only two AAU universities in the Pacific Northwest.

Today the UO is a world-class teaching and research university with more than 200 comprehensive academic programs and more than 25 research centers and institutes, offering both breadth and depth in the liberal arts and sciences as well as professional programs.

Research, both basic and applied, is fundamental to the mission of the University of Oregon.  The departments of biology, chemistry, and human physiology are among the most distinctive and prolific at the University of Oregon.
